Rosh Hashanah : Jewish New Year
Speak unto the children
of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month,
shall you have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy
convocation. |

Rosh
Hashana is the Jewish New Year. (Rosh = Head, Hashana = Year) It is
the beginning of the Days of Awe and is a time of reflection and repentance.
It is the traditional celebration for the creation of the world. It
is also called Yom Ha-Zikkaron, Day of Remembrance. |

In Leviticus 23:24-25, God calls the holiday, Yom Teruah, The Day of the Blowing of the Shofar or The Feast of Trumpets. A shofar is a trumpet made from an animal's horn, preferably from a ram. It is used as an alarm to warn or to get attention. Yom Teruah is a call to prepare for His Day of Atonement. A popular Jewish tradition is to eat apples dipped in honey in hopes for a sweet year. Another tradition is the Tashlich, based upon Micah 7:19. Those who practice this tradition take bread crumbs to a river and cast them into the water, as God says, He will "cast all their sins into the depths of the sea." |
