In the scientific Tytonidae family, the barn owl nests in dark hidden places during the day while hunting during the night.

It is recognized by its white heart-shaped face. It has long legs with feathers down to its feet. Unlike other owls that hoot, this bird hisses.

The barn owl doesn't have ear tufts, but it does have asymmetrical ears. One ear is aligned with its nostrils and the other ear is aligned with its forehead. This helps the bird find its prey by triangulation, using the ranges of the two sounds to find the location of its meal.
